Common use
Protopic (tacrolimus) is a topical immunosuppressant used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children over 2 years old. It helps reduce skin inflamation, redness, and itching by blocking immune system reactions that cause flare-ups.
Unlike steroids, Protopic can be used on sensitive skin areas like the face or neck and is often prescribed when other treatments are not effective or cannot be tolerated.
Dosage and direction
Use Protopic exactly as directed by your doctor. Apply a thin layer to affected skin twice daily for up to 6 weeks. Rub it in gently and wash your hands afterward unless the treated area includes the hands.
Avoid covering the area with bandages or dressings unless instructed. Do not use on broken or infected skin.
You may feel mild burning or warmth on the skin when starting treatment - this is common and should lessen with time.
Precautions
Before using Protopic, tell your doctor if you have:
A weakened immune system
Skin infections (viral, bacterial, fungal)
History of skin cancer or lymphoma
Avoid sunlight, tanning beds, and UV lamps while using this medication. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors.
Do not apply to areas with active herpes, shingles, or cold sores.
Contraindications
Do not use Protopic if you:
Are allergic to tacrolimus or any ointment ingredients
Have a known hypersensetivity to macrolide immunosuppressants
Not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor.
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include:
Burning or stinging at application site
Redness or itching
Flu-like symptoms (headache, sore throat)
Less common, but serious:
Skin infections
Swollen glands
Signs of allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing)
Contact your doctor if symptoms become severe or persist.
Drug interactions
Protopic is unlikely to interact with oral medications, but caution is advised if using with:
Other topical immunomodulators
Phototherapy or light treatments
Alcohol (may cause facial flushing)
Tell your doctor about all medications and skin products you use.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the application.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely, but excessive use can increase the risk of side effects. If swallowed or applied in large amounts, seek medical help immidiately.
Storage
Store at room temperature (59° - 77°F or 15° - 25°C). Keep the tube tightly closed and away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
U.S. Sale and Prescription Policy
In the United States, Protopic is FDA-approved and available only by prescription. It is typically prescribed when other eczema treatments, like topical corticosteroids, are not effective or appropriate.
Because of potential cancer risk warnings, Protopic is not intended for long-term continuous use and should only be used as prescribed.
It is not available over-the-counter in the U.S., and selling or using it without a valid prescription may violate federal regulations.
