Common use
Lumigan (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) is used to treat open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, both of which involve elevated pressure inside the eye that can lead to vision loss. Lumigan works by increasing the outflow of intraocular fluid, helping to lower pressure inside the eye.
It may also promote longer, darker, and fuller eyelashes as a side effect, which has led to its cosmetic use, though this is not its primary indication.
Dosage and direction
Apply 1 drop of Lumigan into the affected eye(s) once daily, usualy in the evening. Wash hands before use. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye.
If used for eyelash growth (off-label), apply carefully along the upper eyelid margin using a sterile applicator. Do not apply to the lower lash line.
Do not stop using Lumigan without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better.
Precautions
Before using Lumigan, tell your doctor if you have:
Uveitis or macular edema
Eye infections or recent eye surgery
Liver or kidney disorders
Low blood pressure or heart problems
Avoid using Lumigan while wearing contact lenses. Remove them before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
Long-term use may cause darkening of the iris, eyelid skin, or increased pigmentation of lashes. These effects may be permament.
Contraindications
Do not use Lumigan if you:
Are allergic to bimatoprost or any ingredients in the formulation
Have active eye infections or inflamation
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical supervision.
Possible side effects
Common side effects include:

Avoid mixing eye products unless specifically advised by a healthcare provider.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it's close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not apply extra drops to make up for a missed dose.
Overdose
Topical overdose is rare but may increase side effects. If swallowed, contact poison control or seek emergency care immediately.
Storage
Store Lumigan at room temperature (68° - 77°F or 20° - 25°C). Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze the solution.
U.S. Sale and Prescription Policy
In the United States, Lumigan is FDA-approved and available only with a valid prescription. It is prescribed for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
Although some people use Lumigan for eyelash enhancement, that use is not FDA-approved. A similar product, Latisse, contains the same active ingredient and is specifically approved for cosmetic use with prescription.
Buying Lumigan without a prescription or using it without guidance may be illegal and unsafe in the U.S.
