Common use

Differin (adapalene) is a topical retinoid medication used to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It works by affecting cell turnover in the skin, preventing formation of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

Unlike stronger tretinoins, Differin is known for its gentler formula, making it suitable for sensitive or dry skin types when used correctly.

Dosage and direction

Apply Differin once daily, in the evening before bedtime. Clean and pat dry the skin, then apply a thin layer of gel or cream over the entire face (avoiding the eyes, lips, and nostrils).

Use a small amout - more will not improve results and may increase iritation. Skin may worsen in the first few weeks before improvement begins.

Full benefits may take 8-12 weeks of consistent use.

Precautions

Avoid using Differin on:
Sunburned, eczematous, or broken skin
Areas with active rosacea

Use sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun expossure, as skin becomes more sensitive during retinoid treatment.
Do not wax treated areas due to increased risk of skin injury.

Contraindications

Do not use Differin if you:
Are allergic to adapalene or any ingredients in the formulation
Have severe cystic acne (consult dermatologist)
Are pregnant unless cleared by a doctor

Differin is generally safe during breastfeeding when not applied to the chest area.

Possible side effects

Common side effects (usually lessen with continued use):
Dryness
Peeling
Redness
Mild burning or itching

Rare but serious reactions:
Severe swelling
Crusting or blistering
Persistent pain

Stop use and consult a doctor if symptoms are intense or do not improve.

Drug interactions

Avoid using with other irritating products such as:
Benzoyl peroxide (unless advised by doctor)
Alcohol-based cleansers
Astringents or exfoliants

Check with your dermatologist before combining products.

Missed dose

If you forget to apply Differin, use it as soon as you remember that night. If it's already the next day, skip the missed dose - do not double the application.

Overdose

Using excessive amounts can increase skin irritation, peeling, and redness. It does not improve effectiveness. If accidentally swallowed, seek medical attention.

Storage

Store at room temperature (68° - 77°F or 20° - 25°C). Keep tightly closed and away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.

U.S. Sale and Prescription Policy

Differin 0.1% gel is FDA-approved and available over the counter in the United States. Stronger concentrations, like Differin 0.3%, still require a prescription.

OTC Differin is sold legally in pharmacies and online platforms, while prescription strengths are typically used for more severe cases.
