Common use
Accutane (isotretinoin) is a retinoid medication used to treat severe, cystic or nodular acne that has not improved with other antibiotics or topical treatments. It works by reducing the amount of oil released by sebaceous glands and by helping skin renew itself faster.
Accutane also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. It is usually used as a last resort when all other methods have failed.
Dosage and direction
Take Accutane exactly as directed by your dermatologist. It is usually taken twice daily with food. Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water.
Do not chew or crush the capsules. Do not take more than prescribed. It is extremly important to follow all directions carefully due to serious potential side effects.
Precautions
Before taking Accutane, tell your doctor if you have:
Liver disease
High cholesterol
Diabetes
Mental health issues (depression, suicidal thoughts)
Digestive disorders
Accutane can cause severe birth defects. Women of childbearing age must use two forms of birth control and enroll in the iPLEDGE program. Regular blood tests will be required.
Contraindications
Do not take Accutane if you:
Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
Are breastfeeding
Have severe liver disease
Have an allergy to isotretinoin or other retinoids
Women must not become pregnant during treatment and for at least 1 month after the last dose.
Possible side effects
Common side effects:
Dry lips, skin, or eyes
Nosebleeds
Peeling skin
Thirst or dehydration
Serious side effects:
Depression or suicidal thoughts
Vision or hearing problems
Severe stomach pain or rectal bleeding
Signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes)
Stop using the drug and seek medical help if you experience any serious or alergic reactions.
Drug interactions
Avoid taking vitamin A supplements while on Accutane.
Accutane may interact with:
Tetracycline antibiotics
Corticosteroids
Anti-seizure medicines
Progesterone-only birth control
Always tell your doctor about all drugs and supplements you are using.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with your next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Overdose
Signs of overdose include vomiting, facial flushing, stomach pain, dizziness, or headaches. Contact poison control or seek immedate medical help.
Storage
Store Accutane at room temperature (68° - 77°F or 20° - 25°C). Keep away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep the capsules in the original package. Do not use expired medication.

Accutane is a strictly regulated medication in the United States. It is FDA-approved and can only be prescribed through the iPLEDGE program, which requires monthly visits, blood tests, and risk acknowledgment forms.
It is illegal to buy Accutane without a valid prescription in the U.S. Generic isotretinoin is available, but the same restrictions apply. Due to serious side effects, including birth defects and mental health risks, tight control is enforced.
