Common use
Crotamiton is a topical scabicide and anti-itch agent used to treat scabies (a parasitic skin infection) and pruritus (itching of the skin). It works by killing the mites that cause scabies and by soothing irritated skin.
Crotamiton can be applied as a cream or lotion and is typically used in adults and children over 3 years of age. It provides relieff from itching that may persist even after scabies treatment.
Dosage and direction
Clean and dry the skin before applying the medication. Apply a thin layer of crotamiton to the entire body from the chin down, avoiding the eyes, mouth, and mucous membraines.
For scabies: apply once a day for 2 to 5 days, or as prescribed.
For itching: apply to the affected area as needed, usually 2-3 times daily.
Do not use more than recommended. Hands should be washed after application unless being treated.
Precautions
Before using crotamiton, inform your doctor if you have:
Open wounds or broken skin
A history of skin allergies or sensitivities
Severe skin irritation or inflammation
Avoid using in the eye area or on inflamed, bleeding, or weeping lesions. This medication is for external use only.
Contraindications
Do not use crotamiton if you:
Are allergic to crotamiton or any of its ingredients
Have acute skin conditions like eczema flare-ups or raw/broken skin
It is not recommended for use in children under 3 years old or during pregnency unless directed by a doctor.
Possible side effects
Common side effects include:
Mild burning or stinging
Irritation at the site of application
Skin dryness or redness
Rare (but serious) effects:
Severe allergic reaction
Rash or swelling that worsens
Difficulty breathing (seek immediate help)
Stop using the product if symptoms worsen or new irritation develops.
Drug interactions
There are no significant known drug interactions with crotamiton. However, do not apply other topical medicines or cosmetics to the same area without medical advice, as this may increase irritation or reduce effectiveness.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply exessive amounts to compensate.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely but may cause severe skin irritation. Ingesting crotamiton can be dangerous - if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, or dizziness.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 68° - 77°F (20° - 25°C). Keep tightly closed and away from direct heat or light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
U.S. Sale and Prescription Policy
In the United States, crotamiton is available by prescription only under brand names such as Eurax. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of scabies and certain types of pruritus.
It is not sold over the counter. A valid doctor prescription is required for purchase and use in all 50 states.
Always follow your doctor instructions, especially when treating infectious conditions like scabies to prevent spreading.
